Dr. Don’s Double Dose - Don Hopkins & Rob Grosser
An influential part of Sydney's Blues scene since the 1970s, piano player and vocalist, Don Hopkins was inducted into the Goulburn Australian Blues Music Festival’s Blues Walk Of Fame in 2002. A Dr. Don’s Double Dose performance draws from the rich vein of blues and jazz of the 1920s and 30s through to the r&b, and soul of the 1950s and 60s with the emphasis on the New Orleans, piano styles. You’ll hear songs from Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charles Brown, Huey ‘Piano’ Smith, Smiley Lewis, and many more. Don’s own compositions are also included in the mix. From 2001, Don teamed up with drummer Rob Grosser (The Aliens, Tim Gaze, Jon Lord) forming Dr. Don’s Double Dose. Their CD “Conjure Bag” was released in 2004. Don has been an integral part of Jim Conway’s Big Wheel since it’s inception in 2002 with 2 CDs “Little Story” and “Share This Life” that feature many tracks with Don’s songwriting, singing and playing. Before this Don led successful bands Donny Hop & the Kings of Bop and Gumbo Fever with Mal Green (Split Enz) producing the popular Live At The Schuss Bar CD.
Don has also backed blues greats like sax honker, Big Jay McKneely and Chicago blues harpist, Carey Bell. Don also supported the late Bo Jocque from Louisiana. He played in Lucky Oceans’ Festival Western Swing Band at the National Folk Festival in 2005 and also toured Austria in that year. He collaborated with Tina Harrod and Jackie Orszaczky on a Gospel meets Jazz Show. Rob Grosser - drums and percussion Don Hopkins Music
